The European champions began qualifying for the 1998 World Cup with an outdated team still featuring players who had become world champions in 1990. Matthias Sammer and Dieter Eilts were injured during the campaign and the once-dangerous Klinsmann could only score twice against Armenia. Germany became group winners with two points ahead of Ukraine. At the World Cup, the Mannschaft opened against America with Möller and Klinsmann providing the 2-0. Against Yugoslavia, they trailed 0-2 and got another push after an own goal by the Yugoslavs. In the 80th minute, Bierhoff kicked in the equaliser. In the final group game, they won from Iran and became the group winner thanks to a better goal difference than Yugoslavia. Klinsmann and Bierfhof who also scored against Iran did the same in the eighth final against Mexico. In the quarter-finals, Germany took a beating from Croatia who won 0-3 and handed Germany their heaviest World Cup defeat since 1958. For the second time in a row, Germany was not in the last four. After two friendlies in September 1998 against Malta and Romania, a rejuvenated team could not convince and coach Vogts took a step back.
