Between 2013 and 2014, the club reclaimed the national championship title, but faced disappointment in the subsequent Libertadores tournaments, twice being eliminated in the quarter-finals. The year 2015 marked significant departures, with Luvas Silva and Everton Ribeiro leaving for Real Madrid and Al-Ahli respectively. These losses affected Cruzeiro's performance, leading to a poor start in the championship with two defeats and a draw in three matches. Additionally, a 3-0 home defeat to River Plate on May 27, 2015, resulted in elimination from the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. Following these setbacks, Marcelo Oliveira departed from the club, and on June 2, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who previously coached the team from 2002 to 2004, took over. Despite winning the Copa do Brasil in 2017 and 2018, the club's fortunes declined, with an eighth-place finish in 2018 followed by relegation for the first time in 2019.
