To the surprise of many, Brazil went 24 years without winning a World Cup or even reaching a final. This period included 16 years without advancing to the round of eight, with their best result being third place in 1978. Their struggles ended at the 1994 tournament in the United States, where a solid, if unspectacular, team led by Romário, Bebeto, Dunga, Taffarel, and Jorginho won the World Cup for a then-record fourth time. Playing all but two of their matches in California, highlights of their campaign included a 1–0 victory over the host United States in the round of 16, a thrilling 3–2 win over the Netherlands in the quarter-finals in Dallas (often cited as the game of the tournament), and a 1–0 win over Sweden in the semi-finals. This set up a classic final against Italy at the Rose Bowl, just outside Los Angeles. After a tense and goalless draw, the match went to penalty kicks, where Roberto Baggio's miss secured Brazil's victory. With this win, Brazil began a new era of dominance in world football.
