The 1994–95 season marked Manchester United's third in the Premier League and their 20th consecutive season in England's top division. Early in the season, they signed David May from Blackburn Rovers, and in January, they broke the British transfer record by acquiring Andy Cole from Newcastle United for £7 million (£6 million cash plus player exchange involving Keith Gillespie). However, the season was overshadowed by a controversial incident involving Eric Cantona, who was involved in a physical altercation with a fan during a match against Crystal Palace. Cantona received an eight-month ban from football and hefty fines from both his club and the Football Association. Despite a chance to win the Premier League on the final day when Blackburn Rovers lost, Manchester United could only manage a draw against West Ham United, leading to them missing out on the title. Their disappointment continued with a loss to Everton in the 1995 FA Cup final.
