The 2000–01 season was Manchester United's ninth in the Premier League and their 26th consecutive in the top tier of English football. They won the Premier League for the third consecutive season and the seventh time since its inception in 1993. However, they had less success in cup competitions, being eliminated in the fourth round of both the FA Cup and League Cup, and the quarter-finals of the Champions League. New goalkeeper Fabien Barthez was an immediate success, resulting in previous first-choice keeper Mark Bosnich not featuring in the first team. Bosnich joined Chelsea on a free transfer in January but found limited opportunities there as well. Veteran striker Teddy Sheringham had an outstanding season, finishing as the club's top scorer and winning both the PFA and FWA Player of the Year awards. The signing of Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy from PSV Eindhoven at the end of the season led to Sheringham's departure to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. Henning Berg also left the club, initially on loan to Blackburn Rovers and then on a permanent transfer in December, helping Blackburn secure promotion back to the Premier League after a two-year absence.
