In the 1999-2000 season, Parma qualified for the Champions League preliminaries but lost the first leg 2-0 to Rangers in Glasgow. Despite winning their first Italian Super Cup by defeating AC Milan, Parma's 1-0 home victory against Rangers was insufficient for advancing to the group stage. Consequently, they competed in the UEFA Cup, where they reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Werder Bremen. In Serie A, Parma finished tied with Inter, both with 58 points, and shared fourth and fifth place. A playoff, held in Verona, determined that Inter secured the fourth spot and a place in the Champions League preliminaries with a 3-1 victory. In the Coppa Italia, Parma's campaign was brief. They were eliminated in the round of 16 after losing 1-0 to Cagliari away and drawing 2-2 at home.
