Scotland secured qualification for the European Championship in England relatively comfortably. They suffered only one defeat, against Greece, and managed two draws against Russia, finishing second in their group behind Russia with significant leads over Greece and Finland. Their campaign began with a goalless draw against the Netherlands. In the much-anticipated 'derby' against England, Gary McAllister missed a penalty when Scotland trailed 1-0, and Paul Gascoigne's individual brilliance sealed the victory for England. In their final group match against Switzerland, Scotland's fate depended on the outcome of the Netherlands-England match. If the result between the two teams was a draw, Scotland's fate would be decided, but if one team lost, Scotland needed to overcome a four-goal deficit. England thrashed the Netherlands 4-0, while Scotland led 1-0 against Switzerland thanks to Ally McCoist's goal. However, Patrick Kluivert scored for the Netherlands, and despite Switzerland's goalkeeper Marco Pascolo's heroics, Scotland was eliminated from the group stage for the fourth time on goal difference.
