In the early 1990s, Nîmes Olympique invested heavily in transfers to regain their place in the top division. They signed Argentine World Cup winner José Luis Cuciuffo (1990-1993) to strengthen their squad. After securing promotion, the club brought in prominent French internationals like Philippe Vercruysse (1991-1993) and star striker Éric Cantona, who departed for England just four and a half months after joining for a transfer fee of 10,000,000 francs. Defender Laurent Blanc (1992-1993), who had limited playing time at SSC Napoli, joined the following season but couldn't prevent the team from being relegated. Despite the prestige of these signings, their overall impact and results were mixed.
