Real Sociedad experienced its peak success in the 1980s, winning two La Liga titles in 1981 and 1982 and reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1983, where they were defeated by eventual champions HSV. In 1987, they also won the Spanish Cup. Notably, Real Sociedad holds the record for the longest unbeaten run in the Spanish league, going 32 matches without a loss from April 29, 1979, to May 4, 1980. Despite only losing one more game at the end of that season, they fell short of the title, which was claimed by Real Madrid by a single point.
