This season began without Michael Laudrup, who retired, and saw the departures of Frank and Ronald de Boer to Barcelona in January. Replacements included Benni McCarthy, Jesper Grønkjær, and Giorgi Kinkladze. Ajax started the season with a 2-0 loss to PSV in the Johan Cruijff Schaal. In the Champions League, they finished last in their group with seven points, behind Olympiakos, Dinamo Zagreb, and Porto. During the season, Morten Olsen was replaced by former Ajax midfielder Jan Wouters as head coach. The team finished sixth in the league, 23 points behind champions Feyenoord, but won their fourteenth KNVB Cup, defeating Feyenoord in the semi-finals and Fortuna Sittard 2-0 in the final.
