Bayern Munich hired Ottmar Hitzfeld as coach for the season, replacing Giovanni Trapattoni, and welcomed back Stefan Effenberg. They saw Ruggiero Rizzitelli return to Italy and sold Dietmar Hamann to Newcastle United. The season began triumphantly with Bayern winning the League Cup and securing a spot in the Champions League group stage after defeating Obilić. Despite a loss to Brøndby in their opener, Bayern topped their group with victories over Barcelona and Manchester United. Domestically, they maintained a strong Bundesliga lead, briefly sharing the top spot with Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 17. In the Champions League, Bayern advanced to the final by eliminating Kaiserslautern and Dynamo Kiev. In the Champions League final on May 26, 1999, Bayern faced Manchester United and took an early lead with Mario Basler's goal. However, Manchester United scored twice in the dying minutes to snatch victory from Bayern. Despite the Champions League heartbreak, Bayern clinched their fifteenth Bundesliga title, finishing fifteen points ahead of Leverkusen. They also reached the German Cup final but lost to Werder Bremen on penalties.
