After being promoted in 1989, N.E.C.'s stay in the Eredivisie was brief. They finished sixteenth and eighteenth in subsequent seasons, leading to their relegation back to the First Division, where they remained until 1994. In the same season, N.E.C. reached the KNVB Cup finals but lost to Feyenoord. Despite these challenges, N.E.C. managed to stay in the Eredivisie by narrowly avoiding relegation. In 1998, the team achieved its best result in twenty years by finishing eighth. This strong performance continued, allowing N.E.C. to enter the 21st century as a fixture in the Eredivisie.
