Real Madrid endured its worst domestic season since 1976–77, finishing in 6th place. Unlike the previous nine seasons under various coaches, the team's offense struggled due to injuries to key players. In November, president Ramón Mendoza resigned amid economic and sporting challenges, leading to the promotion of Lorenzo Sanz as president to oversee recovery. Three months later, Jorge Valdano was dismissed due to poor league performance and an early exit from the Copa del Rey, where they were knocked out by Espanyol. Arsenio Iglesias took over as manager on January 24, 1996. Under his leadership, the team reached the Champions League quarter-finals, losing to Juventus 2–1 on aggregate, and finished sixth in the league. Although this placed them in the following season's Intertoto Cup, they opted not to participate, marking the first time since 1977 that Real Madrid would not compete in European football.
