In the 1996-1997 season the Colchoneros, defending champions, finished fifth, failing to repeat the previous year's triumph. In the Copa del Rey, Atlético Madrid reached the quarterfinals, where it was eliminated by Barcelona, which would later win the title. The Spanish Super Cup once again sees the rojiblancos lose to Barça. Atletico did play in the Champions League this season and managed to beat the likes of Dortmund and Bucharest.
