In the 1991-1992 season, Napoli finished fourth in Serie A with 42 points, while Milan claimed the championship. Napoli was third at the halfway mark with 23 points but experienced a slight decline in the second half of the season. After Maradona's departure, President Corrado Ferlaino aimed to keep the team competitive by appointing Claudio Ranieri as coach and replacing Luciano Moggi with Giorgio Perinetti as sporting director.

Ranieri brought in defenders Massimo Tarantino and Laurent Blanc, midfielder Stefano De Agostini, and striker Michele Padovano. Despite Maradona's absence, the attack remained strong, finishing as the third-best in the league. Careca enjoyed a resurgence, scoring 15 goals, while young Gianfranco Zola stepped up with 12 goals. Blanc also contributed with 6 goals.

However, the defense was a weak spot, ranking only eighth in the league. After a strong first half, Napoli's form declined, finishing 14 points behind champions Milan. Despite this, Napoli secured a respectable fourth place, earning qualification for the UEFA Cup.
