Liam Brady took over in 1991 as Celtic manager shortly after McNeill's departure, becoming the club's first manager in over 100 years who had not previously played for them. Despite his impressive playing career with Arsenal, Juventus, and the Republic of Ireland, Brady struggled to achieve success as a manager at Celtic. In his first season, Brady made several transfer moves. He signed striker Tony Cascarino for a club record £1.1 million from Aston Villa in the summer of 1991. However, Cascarino failed to impress and was traded to Chelsea in February 1992 for Scotland defender Tom Boyd. Brady also signed Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie for £925,000 in August 1991, but Gillespie struggled with the physicality of Scottish football. To strengthen the defense, Brady signed Tony Mowbray from Middlesbrough for £1 million, but both Gillespie and Mowbray were plagued by injuries and rarely played together. Celtic faced a disastrous 5-1 defeat in the first leg of their UEFA Cup match against Swiss side Neuchâtel Xamax on 23 October 1991, with Egyptian striker Hossam Hassan scoring four goals. They managed only a 1-0 win in the return leg at Celtic Park, resulting in a 5-2 aggregate loss, one of the worst European defeats in the club's history. The 1991-92 season ended with Celtic finishing third in the league behind Rangers and Hearts. They lost to Airdrie on penalties in a League Cup quarter-final after a 0-0 draw and were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by a 10-man Rangers team in the semi-finals.
