Amid controversies in the domestic league, Italy entered the 2006 World Cup as one of the eight seeded teams. They topped Group E with victories against Ghana and the Czech Republic and a draw with the United States. In the round of 16, Italy clinched a 1–0 win over Australia, with Francesco Totti scoring from a penalty. They defeated Ukraine 3–0 in the quarter-finals, with goals from Gianluca Zambrotta and Luca Toni. In the semi-finals, Italy triumphed over hosts Germany 2–0, with goals from Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero in extra time. On July 9, 2006, Italy secured their fourth World Cup title by defeating France in the final. Zinedine Zidane opened the scoring for France from a penalty, countered by Marco Materazzi's goal from a corner kick. The match went into extra time, during which Zidane was red-carded for headbutting Materazzi. Italy won the penalty shootout 5–3, with Grosso netting the decisive penalty. Seven Italian players, including Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo, were named to the tournament All-Star Team by FIFA. Buffon also received the Lev Yashin Award for the best goalkeeper, conceding only two goals throughout the tournament and remaining unbeaten for 460 minutes. In recognition of their victory, the squad members were honored with the Italian Order of Merit of Cavaliere.
