Liverpool had an outstanding season, achieving a remarkable treble of cup competitions and ending Gérard Houllier's three-year wait for silverware at Anfield. The first trophy came on February 25, when they won the Worthington Cup after a thrilling 5–4 penalty shoot-out against Birmingham City, following a 1–1 draw. This match marked the first club game at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium while Wembley was under renovation. The second part of the treble was clinched on May 12, when two late goals from Michael Owen turned around a deficit against Arsenal in the FA Cup final, securing a 2–1 victory. The UEFA Cup final was perhaps the most dramatic, featuring nine goals as Alavés battled back from being down 3–1 and 4–3, only for Liverpool to emerge victorious 5–4 after extra time. The FA and UEFA Cup victories allowed Liverpool to compete in the Charity Shield and UEFA Super Cup at the start of the next season, winning both matches. Promising midfielder Steven Gerrard was named PFA Young Player of the Year for his significant contributions during this successful season, supported by British stars like Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, Jamie Carragher, Danny Murphy, and new signings Gary McAllister and Emile Heskey, alongside continental players such as captain Sami Hyypiä, Sander Westerveld, Jari Litmanen, and Dietmar Hamann. Sadly, just after the season concluded, former manager Joe Fagan, who led the team to a similar treble in 1984, passed away at the age of 80 following a long illness.
