The 1991–92 season marked the 71st consecutive year in the Football League and the 74th overall for the club. It was also their tenth straight season in the First Division and their 16th overall. On the final day of the season, Luton Town was relegated, meaning they would play in the second tier the following year and miss out on a place in the new FA Premier League. This season marked the beginning of David Pleat's second tenure as Luton Town manager. He returned in the summer of 1991, succeeding Jimmy Ryan after previously managing the club from 1978 to 1986.
