This season marked Manchester City's first in the Premier League under manager Kevin Keegan. Keegan, who replaced Joe Royle after the club was relegated to the Football League First Division, had led the team back to the top flight within a year. The previous season, City had secured promotion by winning the First Division and breaking several club records.
During the summer transfer window, Keegan bolstered the squad with high-profile signings such as Nicolas Anelka, Sylvain Distin, and Peter Schmeichel. Anelka's £13m transfer fee from Paris Saint-Germain set a new club record. Distin also joined from PSG for £5m, and Schmeichel arrived on a free transfer from Aston Villa. Other additions included Marc-Vivien Foé on loan from Lyon, Vicente Matías Vuoso, and Mikkel Bischoff. In January, Keegan further strengthened the team with Robeie Fowler, David Sommeil, and Djamel Belmadi.
The season also saw a significant boardroom change. Chairman David Bernstein, who had played a key role in hiring Keegan, resigned following a dispute over finances and management structure, with John Wardle succeeding him.
On the field, Manchester City achieved their first Manchester Derby victory in over 13 years, ensuring Peter Schmeichel maintained his unbeaten derby record. This season was also notable for being City's last at the historic Maine Road ground, with Marc-Vivien Foé scoring the final goal there before the club moved to the City of Manchester Stadium.
