In the 2006/07 season, SBV Excelsior, a Rotterdam-based club, entered its 45th year of professional football since 1954. Having been promoted to the Eredivisie the previous season, the team was now under the management of Ton Lokhoff, who succeeded Mario Been. Despite Lokhoff’s efforts, Excelsior finished 16th in the league, resulting in relegation back to the second division. In the KNVB Cup, Excelsior was eliminated in the third round by Go Ahead Eagles, after a win against RKSV Schijndel in the second round. The team's top scorer for the season was striker Andwelé Slory, who netted 12 goals in 29 league matches.
