In the 2000-2001 season, Genoa competed in the Serie B championship, finishing twelfth with 47 points. The season was turbulent, marked by frequent coaching changes and a mid-table finish. It began with Bruno Bolchi as head coach, but after five matches with only two draws, he was replaced by Guido Carboni and Alfredo Magni. This pair managed the team until a home defeat to Chievo in late January. Bolchi returned briefly, losing two matches against Siena and Empoli. Claudio Onofri then temporarily took over before Franco Scoglio was appointed for the remainder of the season. Genoa, who were fourth from the bottom at the season's midpoint with 20 points, improved in the second half to secure twelfth place. Cosimo Francioso and Marco Carparelli were the top scorers, each with 13 goals. In the Coppa Italia, Genoa's campaign was short-lived, as they failed to advance past the preliminary round, winning only one match by forfeit and ultimately losing to Cosenza.
