The season began with Arsenal making two significant signings at Highbury. After a prolonged pursuit, they acquired goalkeeper David Seaman from Queens Park Rangers, who went on to keep 29 clean sheets in 50 matches. Arsenal’s former first-choice goalkeeper, John Lukic, was sold to Leeds United. Swedish winger Anders Limpar was brought in from Cremonese, leading to the departures of Brian Marwood and Martin Hayes. Additionally, Arsenal bolstered their defense with Norwich's Andy Linighan, though he wasn't a regular starter. Newcomers David Hillier and Andy Cole also made their debuts, with Hillier playing 22 games and earning a league title medal. Arsenal's season began strongly with a 3–0 win over Wimbledon and a 2–1 victory against Luton Town. By the end of October, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham were all unbeaten, making it look like a tight title race. However, Tottenham soon fell behind, leaving Arsenal and Liverpool as the main contenders. On October 20, Arsenal defeated Manchester United 1–0 at Old Trafford, but the match was overshadowed by a 21-player brawl, resulting in Arsenal losing two points and Manchester United one point. Both teams were fined £50,000. Arsenal’s League Cup campaign ended in the fourth round with a heavy 6–2 defeat to Manchester United, breaking their 17-game unbeaten streak. They bounced back with a 3–0 win over Liverpool, ending Liverpool's unbeaten league run, but Arsenal only took the top spot in the new year. Captain Tony Adams was jailed for two months in December, which contributed to Arsenal's only league defeat of the season, a 2–1 loss to Chelsea. The title race was further complicated when Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish resigned in February, with Ronnie Moran temporarily managing until Graeme Souness took over later. By then, Arsenal seemed well-positioned for the title. Arsenal's bid for a double was thwarted in the FA Cup semi-final by Tottenham, who went on to win the cup. Arsenal secured the league title in their penultimate match on May 6, with Alan Smith scoring a hat-trick in a 3–1 win over Manchester United. Limpar then scored a hat-trick in Arsenal’s final game, a 6–1 victory over Coventry City. Throughout the season, Arsenal lost just one game and conceded only 18 goals in the league. Alan Smith, Arsenal's top scorer, won the Golden Boot for the second time in three years. The league title also qualified Arsenal for European competition in the 1991/92 season, marking the end of the five-year ban on English clubs.
