The acquisition of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) by French premium television channel Canal+ significantly revitalized the club. With 40% of its revenue coming from TV rights, Canal+ helped PSG eliminate a substantial 50 million franc debt and appointed Michel Denisot, a former journalist for the channel, as club president, replacing Francis Borelli. The 1991–92 season saw the end of the club’s long-time shirt sponsorship with French radio RTL and the introduction of the new Virage Auteuil stand, aimed at providing a safer, more inclusive environment for fans. The club faced declining attendance, partly due to issues with violence and racism in the Kop of Boulogne. To address this, Canal+ supported the creation of the Auteuil stand, which featured the ultra groups Lutèce Falco and Supras Auteuil. With increased financial backing from Canal+, PSG aimed to qualify for European competitions and win the French championship within three years. The club’s budget was raised from 90 to 120 million francs, facilitating the recruitment of key players. The team was strengthened with Brazilian internationals Ricardo and Valdo, French players Paul Le Guen, Laurent Fournier, Bernard Pardo, Bruno Germain, and Patrick Colleter, and young talent David Ginola. Despite some criticism of coach Artur Jorge’s playing style, PSG finished third in the league, securing a spot in the UEFA Cup and achieving their initial goal. The season also marked the retirement of legendary goalkeeper Joël Bats.
