Chelsea’s 2010–11 season was a turbulent campaign under manager Carlo Ancelotti, who had led them to the Double the year before but was dismissed at the end of this season. The Blues started brilliantly, winning their first five league matches and leading the Premier League table through the autumn. However, a poor winter run saw them lose momentum, and despite a late surge they finished 2nd behind Manchester United. In Europe, Chelsea reached the Champions League quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by United, while their domestic cup runs ended early — the FA Cup fourth round and the League Cup third round. The club also lost the Community Shield to United. January 2011 was notable for record-breaking transfers: Fernando Torres arrived from Liverpool for £50 million, and David Luiz joined from Benfica. Nicolas Anelka finished as the club’s top scorer with 16 goals in all competitions, while Florent Malouda led in the league with 13.
