In the 1986–87 season Torino, led by coach Luigi Radice, endured a difficult Serie A campaign, finishing 11th with 26 points, far from the top places; their main signing Wim Kieft provided goals, finishing as top scorer with 8 in the league and 16 overall, while the team reached the Round of 16 in both the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup, where they eliminated Nantes and Beveren before falling to Tirol Innsbruck, leaving the season marked by inconsistency and missed opportunities despite occasional strong performances such as a 4–0 win away to Nantes.
