Sparta was founded in 1888 and is thus the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands. The club is one of the 3clubs of Rotterdam. From 1957 till 2002 the club played in the highest division in The Netherlands. The club became six times champion of the Netherlands, the last time being in 1959. The club played in the Eredivisie and participated in the KNVB Cup. Sparta started the season with head coach Hans van der Zee, who took over from interim coach Joop Brand. Under Van der Zee's leadership, Sparta finished in 13th place, just like in the previous season.
