Trabzonspor concluded the 1997-98 season in third place with 66 points. They began their Turkish Cup journey from the sixth tier, progressing to the quarter-finals by defeating Şekerspor 2-0 away and 3-0 at home. Despite losing 2-1 away to Fenerbahçe in the quarter-finals, Trabzonspor won the second leg 3-0 by default and moved on to the semi-finals. A goalless draw at home against Galatasaray was followed by a 4-2 defeat away, resulting in their elimination from the Turkish Cup. In the UEFA Cup, Trabzonspor faced Dundee United in the first round, winning 1-0 at home and drawing 1-1 away to advance. They defeated VfL Bochum 2-1 at home in the second round but lost 5-3 away, ending their UEFA Cup campaign
