Martin O'Neill assumed control of the club in June 2000. During his tenure, Celtic secured three SPL championships out of five, narrowly missing out on the others. In his debut season, O'Neill led the team to a domestic treble, a feat achieved previously only by Jock Stein. Celtic commenced their league campaign with an unbeaten streak of 16 games until suffering a heavy defeat to Rangers in November 2000. They only lost two more matches, both in May after securing the league title. The Scottish Premier League was clinched with a victory over St Mirren in April, and the trophy was received two weeks later following a 1–0 home win over Hearts. Celtic finished 15 points clear of the runner-up, Rangers, amassing 97 points. Additionally, Celtic qualified for the UEFA Cup and commenced their journey with an 11-0 aggregate victory over Jeunesse Esch from Luxembourg in August 2000. Despite a hard-fought 3–2 aggregate victory against HJK Helsinki the following month, Celtic was eliminated in the third round by Girondins de Bordeaux, losing 2–3 on aggregate despite a dominant performance in the second leg in Bordeaux.
