AS Roma did not have a strong season and finished in the bottom half of the league, just a few points above the relegation zone. The new coach, Carlos Bianchi, failed to get the most out of the team and was sacked midway through the season. Club advisor Nils Liedholm took over for the rest of the season. Roma eventually finished 12th in Serie A, with Abel Balbo becoming the club's top scorer with 19 goals.
