Under coach Bert van Marwijk and with standout player Pierre van Hooijdonk, Feyenoord won the UEFA Cup at their home stadium, De Kuip, against German champions Borussia Dortmund. This was their second UEFA Cup victory, coming 28 years after their first, surprising many in the Netherlands. Despite high expectations for the following season, the club fell short. They reached the final of the Dutch cup but lost to their arch-rival and finished third in the league.
