Henry Michel was sacked after a 1-1 draw against Cyprus, and his successor was the completely inexperienced Michel Platini as coach. Under Platini, France lost to both Yugoslavia and Scotland, making qualification for the 1990 World Cup impossible. Despite a late push, France fell one point short of Scotland and failed to qualify. Platini remained as the national coach, and France impressed by winning all eight matches to qualify for the 1992 European Championship, with notable away victories over Czechoslovakia and Spain. Jean-Pierre Papin emerged as a formidable striker at Olympique Marseille, scoring nine goals, while Éric Cantona, controversial for his behavior in French football, made a successful comeback in England at Platini's insistence, leading Leeds United to the championship. With this duo, France was considered one of the favorites for the European Championship in Sweden, alongside Germany and the Netherlands.
