In the 1991-1992 season, Fabio Capello succeeded Arrigo Sacchi as coach of AC Milan after Sacchi became the coach of the Italian national team. Capello, a former player and coach at the club, led the team during a season marked by significant changes. Due to a UEFA disqualification from the previous season, Milan did not participate in European competitions and focused solely on domestic tournaments. Despite losing the Luigi Berlusconi friendly tournament, the squad welcomed back players like Demetrio Albertini, Diego Fuser, and Francesco Antonioli. The team maintained a core roster from Sacchi's era, with notable changes including Rossi in goal and Albertini often replacing Ancelotti. Milan started the league with two narrow wins and two draws, eventually dominating the standings to win their twelfth Scudetto with a 1-1 draw against Napoli, finishing the season undefeated. They became the first team to achieve this feat in Serie A history since Perugia in 1978-79, concluding with 56 points from 22 wins and 12 draws. The team scored 74 goals, averaging over two per game, with Van Basten finishing as the league's top scorer with 25 goals. In the Coppa Italia, Milan advanced through the early rounds but faced Juventus in the semi-finals, where they suffered their only defeat of the season, losing 1-0.
