Feyenoord qualified for the 1999/2000 Champions League after winning the league title in 1999, marking their second appearance since the competition's reorganization in 1992. In the first group stage, they advanced behind Rosenborg Trondheim, surpassing Borussia Dortmund. However, they faced tough competition from Olympique Marseille, Lazio Roma, and Chelsea FC in the second group stage. Needing a win in their final match against Marseille to progress, Feyenoord only managed a draw and were eliminated. The 2000–01 season introduced new manager Bert van Marwijk, who came from Fortuna Sittard. Feyenoord participated in the KNVB Cup, exiting in the round of 16, and in the UEFA Cup, where they were eliminated in the first round after being knocked out by Sturm Graz in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. After a one-year break, Feyenoord returned to the Champions League for the 2001/02 season. Competing against FC Bayern Munich, Sparta Prague, and Spartak Moscow, they failed to advance but secured a third-place finish, allowing them entry into the UEFA Cup. There, they defeated SC Freiburg and Glasgow Rangers before facing PSV Eindhoven in the quarter-finals. Both matches ended in 1-1 draws, leading to a penalty shootout where Pierre van Hooijdonk secured Feyenoord's spot in the semi-finals with the decisive penalty. In the semi-finals, Feyenoord eliminated Inter Milan, setting up a UEFA Cup final against Borussia Dortmund, who had defeated AC Milan. Fortuitously, the final was held at Feyenoord's home stadium. Pierre van Hooijdonk scored twice to give Feyenoord a 2-0 lead. Although Márcio Amoroso and Jan Koller scored for Dortmund, Jon Dahl Tomasson restored Feyenoord's lead, and they emerged victorious, with coach Bert van Marwijk's team winning the UEFA Cup.
