In 2001, France won the FIFA Confederations Cup by defeating Japan 1-0. A few weeks before the World Cup in South Korea and Japan, Zinédine Zidane achieved another major victory with Real Madrid, winning the European Cup I against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. However, a week before the World Cup opener, Zidane was injured in a practice match against South Korea, sidelining him for the first two matches. Without their star player, France struggled against debutant Senegal, losing 0-1. In their next match against Uruguay, the game ended in a 0-0 draw. To make matters worse, France's Thierry Henry was sent off in the 25th minute after a rash tackle. Facing the need to win by two goals against Denmark to advance to the knockout stage, France brought back a heavily bandaged Zidane. Despite his presence, France lost 2-0 to Denmark, ending their World Cup campaign. During the qualifying rounds for the 2004 European Championship, France won all eight of their matches, finishing 10 points ahead of Slovenia. At the tournament in Portugal, France narrowly avoided defeat against England. England led 1-0 in injury time and had missed a penalty taken by David Beckham. However, in injury time, Zidane scored both a free kick and a penalty to secure a dramatic comeback. Following a 2-2 draw with Croatia and a 3-1 victory over Switzerland, France advanced to the quarter-finals.
