Juventus narrowly missed out on the league title in 99-00 due to a controversial refereeing decision. In their penultimate match against Parma, Juventus led 1–0 until stoppage time, when Fabio Cannavaro's equalizing header was disallowed by referee Massimo De Santis for a perceived foul, despite Parma's protests. On the final matchday, title rivals Lazio secured a 3–0 victory over Reggina, while Juventus faced challenges at Perugia amid heavy rain. Referee Pierluigi Collina decided to start the match late, and the Juventus players were anxious as they sought a win to clinch the title. However, Alessandro Calori scored for Perugia, and Juventus couldn't recover, resulting in a loss that cost them the championship. This disappointing conclusion came after Juventus had led the league for most of the season and lost only one of their first 26 matches, but they collapsed in the final eight games, suffering four losses. Additionally, their early exit from the UEFA Cup, where they were defeated 4–0 by Celta Vigo in the round of 16, marked their quickest elimination from European competitions since the 1987–88 season.
