Scotland qualified for the UEFA European Championship for the first time in 1992, albeit by a narrow margin. After suffering a 1–0 defeat to Romania away, their qualification relied on other results. However, a 1–1 draw between Bulgaria and Romania in the final group match allowed Scotland to advance. Although the team performed well against the Netherlands and Germany and achieved a notable victory over the CIS, they were eliminated in the group stage. Scotland then failed to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, finishing fourth in their qualifying group behind Italy, Switzerland, and Portugal. Once it became evident that qualification was out of reach, Andy Roxburgh resigned as team manager.
