Italy played all new countries in qualifying for the 1996European Championship, created by the breakup of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. The start, as usual, was poor with a 1-1draw against Slovenia and a 1-2home defeat against Croatia. Over the course of the cycle, only a draw against Croatia and a wide lead against Lithuania secured qualification. Roberto Baggio did not go to the European Championship in England, relations with Sacchi had already been clouded in America by the substitution against Norway and lesser play by Baggio at his new club AC Milan gave Sacchi an alibie not to select him again. The forward consisted of Gianfranco Zola and Pierluigi Casiraghi, Casiraghi scored twice against Russia. Three days later was already the next match against the Czech Republic and Sacchi decided to rest the duo and replace them with Fabrizio Ravanelli and Enrico Chiesa. The Czechs smelled blood and led by Pavel Nedvěd, the Czechs took a 2-1lead before halftime. Sacchi tried to rectify his miscalculation by bringing in Zola and Casiraghi after halftime, but it was already too late and Italy now had to win against Germany to reach the quarterfinals. After ten minutes, Italy was awarded a penalty kick, but Zola missed. Throughout the match, Germany was put under pressure, but no goals were scored. For a moment hope glimmered, when the Czech Republic trailed 3-2against Russia, but a late equalizer by Vladimír Šmicer. Italy and the Czech Republic both had four points, but the mutual result meant Italy was eliminated early.
