At the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, Yugoslavia reached the quarter-finals despite the political tension back home. They finished second in their group, defeating Colombia (1-0) and the UAE (4-1), but losing to West Germany (4-1). In the Round of 16, they beat Spain 2-1 in extra time, thanks to Dragan Stojković's two goals. Their run ended in the quarter-finals with a 0-0 draw against Argentina, losing 3-2 in a penalty shootout despite being down to 10 men.
