The 1998-1999 season marked Napoli's return to Serie B after 33 years, with their last appearance dating back to the 1964-1965 season. President Corrado Ferlaino aimed for immediate promotion to the top tier and appointed former Napoli captain Antonio Juliano as sporting director. Renzo Ulivieri, experienced in Serie A with Bologna, was chosen as coach. However, Napoli's campaign focused on aging players like Roberto Murgita, Cristiano Scapolo, and Igor Shalimov, who contributed little. By the midway point of the season, Napoli had amassed 27 points with only two home victories, falling short of the fourth-place promotion spot. Their situation worsened in the second half, leading to Ulivieri's dismissal and Vincenzo Montefusco taking over. Napoli finished in a nondescript ninth place with 51 points.
