They took a crucial step forward in Rotterdam with a 0-2 victory. However, the return leg in Lisbon seemed bleak. Despite the Netherlands establishing a 0-2 lead just after halftime, Portugal managed to salvage a point in the closing stages. Pauleta's goal leveled the score, and Figo converted a penalty in injury time. Although Ireland also earned the same number of points, Portugal's superior goal difference secured their qualification for the World Cup.

The tournament itself mirrored past struggles. Conflicts over bonuses and inadequate training facilities persisted, reminiscent of 1986. A seemingly arrogant Portugal suffered an embarrassing defeat against the United States, conceding three goals before eventually losing 3-2. However, they redeemed themselves in the second match with a 4-0 victory over Poland, courtesy of three goals from Pauleta. With the United States later losing to Poland, a draw against host nation South Korea was sufficient to advance to the playoffs.

Yet again, Portugal faced challenges against a less skilled but spirited opponent. Their aggressive play led to João Pinto receiving a red card after 27 minutes and Beto earning a second card in the 68th minute. Shortly after, Park Ji-sung scored the winning goal for South Korea, resulting in Portugal's elimination in the first round.
