In the 2000-2001 season, Fabio Capello's Roma won their third Scudetto, leading the championship for most of the season, marking the first title of the new millennium. In May 2000, as Lazio fans celebrated their Scudetto, Roma became the second Italian club to be publicly traded, following Lazio. The transfer campaign brought in key players like striker Gabriel Batistuta (from Fiorentina), defenders Walter Samuel and Jonathan Zebina, and midfielder Emerson (who arrived injured). Despite an early exit from the Coppa Italia at the hands of Atalanta, which led to fan protests, the league campaign started strong with three consecutive wins, propelling Roma to the top.

A setback came on the fourth matchday with a 2-0 loss to Inter Milan, but Roma quickly recovered with four straight wins, including a notable victory over Fiorentina where Batistuta, in tears, refused to celebrate his decisive goal against his former team. Following a goalless draw in Perugia, Roma defeated Udinese and city rivals Lazio, maintaining a six-point lead over Juventus before the winter break.

Despite being knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Liverpool amid controversy, Roma continued their strong league form. A key 3-2 victory against Inter pushed them closer to the title, with Juventus trailing by nine points as of April 1. A brief dip in form allowed Juventus to close the gap slightly, but a 2-2 draw in their head-to-head clash in Turin, where Roma had initially trailed by two goals, maintained their advantage. Roma comfortably held onto their lead, securing the Scudetto on the final day with a 3-1 win over Parma, much to the delight of their fans at the Stadio Olimpico.
