In the 2002–03 season FC Zwolle played in the Eredivisie after promotion the year before, but struggled at the top level and finished 16th with 32 points, narrowly avoiding relegation through the play-offs; under coach Peter Boeve the team managed some notable wins, including a 5–1 victory over AZ, yet overall lacked consistency and was eliminated in the second round of the KNVB Cup by De Graafschap, while Richard Roelofsen emerged as the league top scorer with 8 goals.
