After a disappointing 1996/97 season that saw AS Roma miss out on European competition, the club appointed Zdeněk Zeman as manager for the 1997/98 season. The team made no significant changes in the transfer market, focusing their strategy around young talent Francesco Totti, deployed as a center forward by the coach, which proved effective in terms of scoring. Despite facing four defeats away from home in league and cup matches, Roma improved their overall performance compared to the previous season. They secured a fourth-place finish with 59 points, qualifying for the UEFA Cup. In the Coppa Italia, Roma began in the second round by eliminating Verona and advanced through the third round by overcoming Udinese. However, their cup run ended in the quarter-finals against Sven Goran Eriksson's Lazio.
