In 1995, FIFA implemented a round-robin format for the Conmebol World Cup qualifiers, leading to Chile qualifying on goal difference over Peru. The striking duo of Marcelo Salas and Iván Zamorano were key players during this campaign. For the 32-team World Cup, coach Nelson Acosta assembled a squad primarily made up of local players, with only four competing abroad. Chile was placed in Group B alongside Austria, Cameroon, and Italy. They began the tournament with a 2-2 draw against Italy, with Salas scoring both goals, despite a controversial penalty awarded to Italy for a handball. Their second match against Austria also ended in a draw, with Salas scoring first before Austria equalized in the last minute. In their final group match against Cameroon, they managed another 1-1 draw, taking the lead with a free kick from José Luis Sierra. This performance allowed Chile to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time outside of Chile. However, in the Round of 16, they were eliminated by Brazil, losing 4-1, with Salas scoring Chile's only goal. Ultimately, the national team finished 16th in the tournament rankings.
