Thanks to Marseille mayor Gaston Defferre, Bernard Tapie became the new president of the club on April 12, 1986, and quickly set about creating one of the most impressive football teams in France's history. His initial signings included Karl-Heinz Forster and Alain Giresse, both acquired after the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Over the next six years, in his quest for the European Cup, Tapie brought in numerous high-profile players, such as Jean-Pierre Papin, Abedi Pelé, Klaus Allofs, Eric Cantona, Igor Dobrovolski, and François Omam-Biyik. He also hired renowned coaches, including Franz Beckenbauer, Gérard Gili, and Raymond Goethals. From 1989 to 1992, Olympique de Marseille dominated French football, winning four consecutive league titles and the French Cup. The club reached its first European Cup final in 1991, where they lost to Red Star Belgrade on penalties. The pinnacle of Marseille's achievements came in 1993 when they won the newly formatted Champions League. Basile Boli scored the only goal in the final against AC Milan at Munich's Olympic Stadium. This victory marked the first time a French club won the title, making Didier Deschamps and Fabien Barthez the youngest captain and goalkeeper, respectively, to achieve this feat.
