In the 1996-1997 season, after Carlo Ancelotti moved to coach Parma, Reggiana turned to Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu. Despite gaining promotion the previous year, the team underwent significant restructuring with the recruitment of experienced but aging foreign players like Georges Grün and Dietmar Beiersdorfer. Unfortunately, signings such as Michael Hatz, Franz Carr, and Adolfo Valencia failed to make a positive impact. To exacerbate their troubles, Reggiana sold key players like Sandro Tovalieri and Marco Schenardi mid-season without adequate replacements, leading to a rapid decline and relegation prospects. Lucescu's tenure was short-lived, managing only four points in ten games before Francesco Oddo took over after a 0-2 defeat against Vicenza. Reggiana's brightest moments came early in 1997 with two away victories, but their fate was sealed by a crucial 0-0 draw against Piacenza on neutral ground, resulting in relegation well before the season's end. In the 1997-1998 Serie B campaign, Reggiana aimed for promotion with players like Filippo Galli, Alberico Evani, Igor' Simutenkov, and Gianluca Berti. Despite a promising start, including reaching fourth place after a win against Ravenna, the team faltered in the second half of the season. Losses in crucial matches against Perugia and Torino dashed their promotion hopes, ultimately finishing in eleventh place after further defeats, including a 0-2 loss at home to Padova, who were eventually relegated.
