Between 1992 and 1994, Switzerland experienced a footballing revival under manager Roy Hodgson, laying the foundation for their qualification to the 1994 World Cup. In the World Cup qualifiers, they topped Group 1 ahead of Italy, Portugal, and Scotland, thanks to disciplined performances and a balanced squad. Key victories included a 3–1 win over Scotland and a 2–1 triumph against Portugal, while a 2–2 draw away to Italy showcased their growing confidence.

At the 1994 World Cup in the USA, Switzerland reached the Round of 16, their first knockout appearance since 1954. They drew with the USA, beat Romania 4–1, and lost narrowly to Colombia in the group stage. In the knockout round, they were eliminated by Spain (3–0), but the campaign was seen as a major step forward. The team featured a strong spine with Stéphane Chapuisat leading the attack, Ciriaco Sforza orchestrating midfield, and Alain Sutter providing width and creativity.
