The 2001/02 season began poorly for Ajax. They were swiftly eliminated from the UEFA Cup by FC Copenhagen and struggled in domestic matches, including a draw against De Graafschap and a loss to PSV. On 28 November 2001, Ajax narrowly won their final game under coach Co Adriaanse, a 3-2 home victory. Within 24 hours of Adriaanse's departure, Ajax appointed former player Ronald Koeman as the new coach, with Ruud Krol, another former player and captain, as his assistant. Ajax's second team also made an impact, reaching the KNVB Cup semi-finals. They were eliminated on penalties by FC Utrecht, which allowed Ajax's first team to face them in the final. Ajax concluded the 2001/02 season successfully by winning both the national championship and the KNVB Cup. On 5 May, they secured the league title with a win over N.E.C. In the cup final, they avenged their semi-final loss with a late equalizer from Wamberto and a golden goal by Zlatan Ibrahimović.
