The season started with Jupp Heynckes as coach, but Bayern Munich was eliminated in the first round of the German Cup by Homburg. Despite advancing to the round of 16 in the UEFA Cup by defeating Cork City, the team struggled in the Bundesliga, ending up at the bottom of the table in the first season after German reunification. On October 9, Søren Lerby, a former player, took over as coach with the team in 12th place in the Bundesliga. Despite his efforts, Bayern was eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Danish side B 1903, suffering a 6-2 defeat in the first leg, which marked their worst away loss in European competition. Lerby was replaced by Erich Ribbeck on March 12, following a 4-0 home defeat to Kaiserslautern. At this point, Bayern was in 11th place with 25 points from 27 matches. The season ended with Bayern finishing in 10th place, their lowest finish since the 1977-78 season.
